Getting wetsuits off in a triathlon transition can be tricky, but with our guide and video you will soon be able to do this with ease, even if you are a beginner triathlete.

A nice trick to help get wetsuits on and off in triathlon transition without them getting stuck is to apply some sort of lubricant to your lower arms and legs beforehand.
This could be baby oil or a custom designed product. You will find it easier to get a tight fitting suit on, and it should slide off a little easier too.
Although against manufacturers guidelines you can apply Vaseline/petroleum jelly around the leg cuffs and around the collar to ease the removal and to avoid chaffing at the collar.
Also if you are wearing a timing chip, then covering this in Vaseline will help it not get caught on your wetsuit.

Avoid pinching the suit, especially if you have long nails as it is easy to put a hole in your wetsuit or worse, rip it.
Most wetsuits enable you to cut the legs down a little to suit your preference. Ideally you want it to finish around the lower part of the belly of your calf. If you leave it too long it can be difficult to get your feet out, as the hole is smaller. Use a good quality pair of scissors to do this.
When on the wetsuit should be snug all over. There should be no bagging of material, creases or other indications that there is more space inside than absolutely necessary to fit you into it!
Some suits require a downward pull to undo the zip, others an upwards. It is preference really, but which ever you use practice it! Make sure the lanyard is secured in an easy-to-grasp place.
Goggles should go on before your hat. This is so that if during the swim your hat is knocked off , your goggles stand a better chance of staying with you.

Before taking your wetsuit off in a triathlon transition, practice the actions in the video. It is actually really easy to run and get your wetsuit down to your waist. Don’t try to take it off any further until you get to your bike!
If you have a really long run to the bike, get the wetsuit down early on then, you can concentrate on running fast to your bike. It’s a little easier taking it down to here straight away as there will still be some water in the wetsuit and this will facilitate it coming off easier.
When you get to your bike, grab both sides at the hips and give the suit a big yank down, trying to get it as far as possible in one action.
If that works well all you need to do then is put one foot on any surplus suit, lift your other knee up high and kick out (avoiding your bike and other competitors)!
Keep the kicking foots pointed and it should pop straight out. Then swap over, making sure the stationary foot is on the rest of the suit (otherwise you could shoot it half way across transition!). You might need to repeat a couple of times (see the last frames in our clip).
