The first modern swim/bike/run event to be called a 'triathlon' was held at Mission Bay, San Diego, California, USA, on September 25, 1974, with 46 participants.

The USA also held the first modern long-distance triathlon – the Hawaiian Ironman.

Since 1982, when the US Triathlon Association and the American Triathlon Association merged, membership has grown from 1,500 to nearly 130,000.

The USA has hosted the triathlon World Championships twice (1990, Orlando, Florida and 1996, Cleveland Ohio).

US triathletes have won medals at world level:

Olympic medals: 1 bronze, Susan Williams, 2004

World Championship medals:

Men: 1 gold in 1989 (Mark Allen), and 1 bronze in 1991 (Mike Pigg).
