Interesting Facts About Triathlon In EuropeTriathlon is a popular sport across Europe. The European Triathlon Union was founded in 1984 to develop triathlon across Europe. There are currently over 30 national federations affiliated, a number which is increasing all the time. Triathletes from many European countries excel on a world stage: Olympic medals: Men: Gold, Germany, 2008; Silver, Germany 2000; Bronze, Czech Republic, 2000 and Switzerland 2004. Women: Gold, Switzerland 2000, Austria 2004; Silver, Portugal 2008; Bronze, Switzerland 2000. The triathlon World Championships have been hosted in Europe many times, with the inaugural event in 1989 taking place in Avignon, France. Since then the World Championships/World Championship Series Grand Finals have taken place in Europe a further 6 times: 1993, Manchester, UK; 1998, Lausanne, Switzerland; 2004, Madeira, Portugal; 2006, Lausanne, Switzerland; 2007, Hamburg, Germany; 2010, Budapest, Hungary. There are many excellent triathlon training venues around Europe. Some of the most popular places include the south of France around the Pyrenees mountains, Spain, and also some of the islands such as Mallorca and the Canary Islands.
